From Need to National Impact

Many Old Starehians entered the Centre burdened by hardship. Today, they are leaders across sectors—testaments to what care, opportunity, and resilience can achieve.

For over 65 years, Starehe Boys’ Centre has been a sanctuary where potential meets opportunity. Founded in 1959 by Dr. Geoffrey Griffin, Joseph Gikubu, and Geoffrey Geturo, the Centre has transformed the lives of over 17,000 young men, instilling in them values of integrity, service, and excellence.

Dr. Geoffrey Griffin, our Founder and lifelong mentor, left us with a powerful message – one that continues to inspire generations of Old Boys. His parting words are not just a farewell, but a charge – a call to live with humility, service, and responsibility.

Dr. Geoffrey W. Griffin's last words to the Starehe Boys.

My dear boys,

I have had a fruitful and happy life, and I have learned one great lesson that I would like to share with you. I hope that Starehe will always teach this lesson – for as long as it does so, it will remain a great school.

This world is full of people who do their duty half-heartedly, grudgingly and poorly. Don’t be like them. Whatever your duty is, do it as fully and perfectly as you possibly can. And when you have finished your duty, go on to spare some time and talent in service for less fortunate people, not for any reward at all, but because it is the right thing to do.

Follow my advice on this, and I promise you that your lives will be happy and successful.

May God bless you all.

🌟 65 Years of Impact and the Road Ahead

In 2024, Starehe Boys’ Centre commemorated its 65th anniversary with a grand gala dinner, bringing together alumni, staff, and stakeholders. The celebration was not just a reflection on past achievements but a call to action for the future. The Centre launched an ambitious campaign to raise Ksh 65 million for the Griffin Memorial Endowment Trust (GMET). This fund aims to provide perpetual scholarships to 65 bright but financially disadvantaged students, ensuring that the Centre’s mission endures for generations to come.

Justice Nzioki wa Makau, President of the Old Starehian Society, emphasized:

“The GMET Fund is not just a financial mechanism; it is the cornerstone of Starehe’s legacy and future. By securing the GMET Fund, we ensure that the vision of our founders—to provide transformative education to bright but needy students—continues to thrive for generations to come.”
