Why Starehe ?

Transforming Lives Through Education, Care, and Character Formation

A Legacy of Hope and Opportunity

For over six decades, Starehe has provided a safe haven and quality education to disadvantaged boys and girls in Kenya. What began as a simple youth club has grown into one of Africa’s most respected secondary schools and technical training centres—offering boys and girls a chance to break free from poverty and build a brighter future.

Starehe Centres are more than just a school. It is a place of rest, care, and transformation, where young boys and girls—many from the streets and orphaned backgrounds—find a home, education, and a nurturing environment that prepares them for success. Today, over 15,000 alumni have gone on to make remarkable contributions globally.

What it takes to sponsor a child

Each year, Starehe provides :

A full scholarship to 70% of its students from severely disadvantaged backgrounds

Three meals a day, shelter, and healthcare

A world-class education with over 40 extracurricular activities

Leadership and character-building programs to foster responsible citizens

The Centre's Three Core Areas

  1. Integration of Needy Boys with Boys from Regular Backgrounds
The school reserves 30% of its education slots for boys from regular families who pay full fees. This financial model helps subsidize the cost of caring for needy boys.
  2. A Rich and Diverse Extracurricular Program
Starehe offers one of the largest and most diverse extracurricular programs, with over 40 clubs. Activities range from security management within the Centre, firefighting, debating, Model UN, scouting, and running a school newspaper. The school also boasts some of the best sports facilities and fields.
  3. A Unique Discipline System
The school has a self-governance model where students take responsibility for their own leadership. A weekly parliamentary system allows students to discuss and implement ideas. They also help the Centre reduce expenses by managing resources such as water and electricity. Additionally, a mandatory voluntary service scheme encourages students to give back to society while gaining valuable work experience at an early age.
