Dr. Geoffrey Griffin Memorial Bike-a-Thon 2026 concludes on a high note

Thirteen Starehe Boys’ Centre & School students successfully completed an extraordinary 1,100-kilometre cycling journey from Busia to Mombasa, marking the successful conclusion of the 2026 Dr. Geoffrey Griffin Memorial Bike-a-Thon.

Held from 3rd to 16th August 2026, the Bike-a-Thon brought together students, Old Starehians, partners, sponsors, staff and supporters in a shared celebration of the enduring legacy of Dr. Geoffrey Griffin and the values upon which Starehe was founded.

From the starting point in Busia to the final stretch into Mombasa, the 13 riders demonstrated remarkable grit, resilience, discipline and determination. Despite the physical and mental demands of the journey, the students remained focused on their purpose: honouring Dr. Griffin’s legacy while raising support for the continued advancement of Starehe Boys’ Centre & School.

A significant part of the boys’ journey was the guidance and mentorship they received from Technical Director Ian Hicho C’05, who rode alongside them throughout the Bike-a-Thon. Beyond his technical expertise, Ian served as a mentor and source of encouragement to the riders, helping them navigate the physical challenges of the route while reinforcing the importance of teamwork, discipline, perseverance and looking out for one another.

The Bike-a-Thon also provided an opportunity to bring the wider Starehe community together. Old Starehians, partners, sponsors, staff, parents and friends of Starehe rallied behind the riders, offering encouragement and support at different stages of the journey.

On the fundraising front, the Bike-a-Thon raised nearly KES 6 million, representing approximately 60% of the KES 10 million target. The funds raised will contribute towards supporting the school’s ongoing programmes and initiatives.

The success of the event would not have been possible without the generosity and commitment of the many organisations and individuals who supported the riders throughout their journey. Special appreciation goes to the Old Starehian Society, Safaricom PLC, St John Ambulance Kenya and Vivo Energy Kenya, whose invaluable support helped make the Bike-a-Thon possible.

The journey was about more than cycling from one town to another. It was a demonstration of what young people can achieve when courage, discipline, resilience and purpose come together. It was also a powerful reminder of the strength of the Starehe community and the enduring impact of Dr. Griffin’s vision.

As the 2026 Dr. Geoffrey Griffin Memorial Bike-a-Thon comes to a close, Starehe celebrates the 13 riders who conquered the 1,100-kilometre route, the mentors who guided them, and every individual and organisation that stood behind them along the way.

Every kilometre carried the Starehe spirit forward.
